Apply for authorisation to work in external facilities or installations with exposure to ionising radiation

If you work as a company or sole trader in a plant or facility or employ persons in which exposure to ionising radiation can lead to an effective dose of more than 1 millisievert per calendar year, you must apply for a permit.

In this case, the persons are considered to be occupationally exposed persons.

For activities in connection with the operation of third-party X-ray equipment and sources of interference, you can choose between this authorisation in accordance with Section 25 of the Radiation Protection Act (StrlSchG) and a notification in accordance with Section 26 StrlSchG.

The licence is usually valid nationwide.

The licence applies to you if you have a company that carries out repair or maintenance work in nuclear power plants, for example, or a cleaning company that works in a nuclear medicine facility.

Persons may only be employed in external plants or facilities once authorisation has been granted and, as a rule, each person to be employed is in possession of a radiation pass.

The authorisation is limited to a maximum of five years.

Prerequisite

  • No concerns about the reliability of the applicant, their legal representative or authorised representative
  • The number of radiation protection officers with the necessary authorisations required for the safe performance of the activity
  • No concerns about the reliability of the radiation protection officers and possession of the necessary expertise in radiation protection
  • Instead of a radiation protection officer, the applicant or their legal representative or authorised representative may also possess the necessary expertise in radiation protection.
  • The persons otherwise involved in the activity must have the necessary knowledge and skills with regard to the possible radiation hazard and the protective measures to be applied.
  • The necessary equipment must be available and appropriate measures must be taken to comply with the relevant protective regulations of the Radiation Protection Act and the Radiation Protection Ordinance.
  • The persons employed in the external plants and facilities must comply with the instructions of the radiation protection officers and radiation protection officers of these plants or facilities, which they issue in fulfilment of their duties under the Radiation Protection Act and the Radiation Protection Ordinance.

  • copies of the letters of appointment of the radiation protection officers, if applicable
  • if applicable, copies of the certificates of competence of the appointed radiation protection officers (or of the applicant if no radiation protection officers have been appointed) including proof of the last update
  • Copy of the radiation protection instruction or draft radiation protection instruction
  • Copy of the demarcation agreement or draft demarcation agreement or other regulation on the distribution of tasks
  • Documents on the existing equipment and the measures taken and on the allocation of tasks
