Applying to an Institution of Higher Education
If you want to apply for a place of study, then – with the exception of the Cooperative State University – apply directly to the institution of higher education which offers it. The requirements on applicants can vary depending on the chosen course of study and the institution of higher education. For a degree at the Cooperative State University, please apply in good time (approx. 1 year in advance) to the companies or welfare institutions.
Note: As part of the selection procedure of the entrance examination, study capability tests can be taken before the application deadline. Ask at the institution of higher education which carried out the procedure for the required course of study in good time for any deadlines.

Procedure
Application for a place of study has to be in writing or online. You have to request the application for admission to the first subject-related semester (Antrag auf Zulassung zum ersten Fachsemester) and also request the application documents at the relevant department or download them from the internet on the website of the institution of higher education.
The application and other requested documents have to be transmitted to the relevant department in due time. The corresponding institution of higher education decides whether or not you are admitted to the course and informs you. Thus, in the case of an application to the Cooperative State University, the decision is taken by the company/welfare institution.
You will receive either a notification of admission, which has details about the deadlines for accepting the place of study and registration (enrolment) at the institution of higher education or a notification of rejection in which you get information on which ranking position you are according to the average grade and the waiting period and also details on the waiting list procedure.
Deadlines
Generally the following applies as the standard deadline for applications:
- 15th July for the coming winter semester
- 15th January for the coming summer semester
Admission to a course of study at the Cooperative State University is possible on the 1st October of each year. The application has to be submitted, as mentioned above, in good time to the companies and be received before the 1st October at the relevant academy of study.
At some institutions of higher education the application deadlines vary. Please inquire on the website of the relevant institution of higher education about the deadlines.
Please note that there are also courses of study (e.g. art, music and design) which have other application deadlines. Get the relevant information in good time. Information can be obtained online on the website of the relevant institution of higher education.
